Colorado Skaters Win Olympic Gold After Surgery, Concussion

After years of surgeries, a concussion, and skating on a broken foot, Colorado Springs figure skaters Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea stood atop the Olympic podium with gold medals around their necks.

The pair claimed victory in the pairs free skate event at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics on Sunday, delivering a performance that earned them 135.36 points and a personal best. For O'Shea, 34, and Kam, 21, the win was the culmination of a journey that began when they were both 4 years old.

"It's been a dream we've been going after for decades now," O'Shea told CBS News on Monday. When asked to describe being an Olympic champion, he could only laugh and admit he couldn't find the words.

Kam kept her medal safe under her pillow the first night, calling it "a heavy weight to carry" in the best possible way. She described their winning moment as magical, saying everything came together with the right energy, trust, and patience.

The road to gold tested both skaters beyond typical athletic demands. O'Shea previously competed on a broken foot at a qualifying event, securing the U.S. a historic additional Olympic spot that experts said was an opportunity the country hadn't had in decades.

Then in 2025, another injury during training required surgery, making his Olympic return questionable. Kam faced her own setback with what she called "one of the worst concussions of my career."

Why This Inspires

The partnership between Kam and O'Shea is relatively new. They teamed up in 2022, each bringing experience from previous skating partnerships. Rather than letting injuries derail their Olympic dreams, they found patience through Kam's concussion recovery and perseverance through O'Shea's surgical comeback.

"Ellie's concussion required patience and trust, especially because recovery isn't always linear or visible," O'Shea said. That patience paid off when they delivered some of their best performances at last month's qualifying event.

Their gold medal moment proved that comebacks don't always follow a straight path, but determination and trust can carry you through.
