Connecticut Clean Energy Jobs Grow 4x Faster Than Average

😊 Feel Good

While Connecticut's overall job market crawled forward at 0.7%, the clean energy sector sprinted ahead with 2.8% growth in 2024. The state now has over 47,000 clean energy jobs, the highest total in its history.

Connecticut's clean energy sector is creating jobs four times faster than the rest of the state's economy, proving green industries aren't just good for the planet—they're powering real economic growth.

A new report from the Connecticut Green Bank shows clean energy employment jumped 2.8% in 2024, compared to just 0.7% growth across all other industries. That brings the total to more than 47,000 jobs, representing over 10% of all employment in the state.

The jobs span energy efficiency, solar power, electric vehicles, battery storage, and other renewable technologies. For Sam Schneider, who founded Earthlight Solar and Energy Solutions 18 years ago, the past five years have been his strongest growth period.

What's particularly striking is who's joining the industry. Schneider says he's seeing professionals from other fields make career switches in their final working years because they want to make a difference.

"We absolutely have noticed older demographics of people who had a great career in some other industry, but who now are looking to, in the final five or 10 years of their career, make a big difference and do something that really helps people," Schneider said. Young workers are flooding in too, driven by the same mission-focused mindset.

The Ripple Effect

This job boom represents more than paychecks. It's reshaping Connecticut's economic identity at a time when many states struggle to create quality employment opportunities.

The clean energy sector now employs one in every ten Connecticut workers. These aren't just temporary construction jobs—they're careers in installation, maintenance, engineering, and manufacturing that can support families for decades.

Brenda Watson, chair of the committee that produced the report, says the numbers prove clean energy has become "a cornerstone of Connecticut's economic future." Even as the industry faces federal policy uncertainty, state-level momentum continues building.

Connecticut families are increasingly choosing solar panels and battery storage for their homes and businesses, creating steady demand that keeps workers employed. That consumer confidence, combined with state support programs, has helped insulate the sector from broader economic slowdowns.

The state's clean energy economy now generates $7 billion annually, and with employment at record highs, thousands of Connecticut families have new reasons to feel optimistic about their financial futures.
