Copper Country Volunteers Fight Senior Loneliness This Easter
A Michigan nonprofit is rallying volunteers to deliver Easter meals and baskets to isolated seniors across the Copper Country. A few-minute visit could be the brightest part of someone's day.
For many seniors across Michigan's Copper Country, a volunteer knocking on their door this Easter Sunday might be the only visitor they see all week.
Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly is preparing to serve holiday ham dinners to older adults at meal sites and through home deliveries throughout the region. The organization still needs a few more volunteers in Baraga County and dining room helpers in the Houghton-Hancock area.
Program Director Pamala Lowney says the mission goes far beyond just dropping off food. Volunteers deliberately keep their routes short enough to allow time for genuine conversations with each senior they visit.
Some volunteers will deliver Easter baskets to nursing home residents, picking up their packages from the Hancock office before spreading joy across the community. Others will help set up dining rooms or serve meals at gathering sites where seniors can share the holiday together.

Registration closes today, March 30th, for seniors who want to receive a meal. Volunteers can still sign up by calling (906) 482-6944 or registering online in just a couple of minutes.
The organization particularly needs drivers in Baraga County and entertainers in the Houghton-Hancock area. All volunteers receive a complimentary meal and the chance to sit down with the elders they're serving.
Sunny's Take
Here's what makes this story special: Lowney points out that stopping by a senior's home for just a brief chat can break through feelings of isolation that many older adults face daily. And it's not a one-way gift. Those quick conversations at the doorstep often become the highlight of the volunteer's day too.
The beauty lies in how simple the act really is. You don't need special training or hours of free time. A few minutes delivering a warm meal and sharing genuine human connection can remind someone they haven't been forgotten.
Easter Sunday will bring the Copper Country together around more than just ham dinners this year.
