Cornwall Aims for World's Largest Cream Tea Party Record
A hospice in Cornwall is gathering tea lovers to break a world record while raising funds for terminally ill patients. More than 1,088 people need to join the scone-filled celebration to claim the title from China.
A charity supporting people with terminal illnesses is turning a beloved British tradition into a record-breaking fundraiser that could bring an entire community together over tea and scones.
Cornwall Hospice will host the world's largest cream tea party on September 19 at the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge. The event celebrates the charity's 45th anniversary while attempting to beat the current Guinness World Record of 1,088 participants set in Xiamen, China in 2019.
Comedian Josh Widdicombe launched the initiative, bringing star power to a cause that touches thousands of families each year. The hospice provides specialist care, advice and support to patients at its Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia's locations throughout Cornwall.
Director of income generation Frazer Hopkins said the event offers something the whole community can rally behind. "The Great Cornish Cream Tea is about celebrating community," he explained. "Cream teas are such a cherished part of our culture and we wanted to create something that honours that tradition while making a real difference."

Guinness World Records has strict rules for participants. Everyone must finish their entire scone with jam and cream, plus drink all the tea in their cup to count toward the official total.
Why This Inspires
This gathering shows how communities can turn simple pleasures into powerful acts of service. Cream tea parties have been part of Cornish culture for generations, and now that tradition becomes a vehicle for supporting neighbors facing life's hardest moments.
The event transforms individual enjoyment into collective impact. Each person who attends doesn't just eat a scone. They become part of a movement supporting hospice patients and their families during the most challenging times imaginable.
Events and challenges partner Ellie Smith captured the spirit perfectly: "Let's fill the hall, raise our scones, and show the world what Cornwall can do."
The challenge brings together humor, heritage and heart for a cause that touches nearly every family eventually. When communities gather around shared traditions, they create something bigger than themselves.
