Cornwall Women Win First Twickenham Match, Earn Promotion

Cornwall's women's rugby team had never played at the legendary Twickenham Stadium before Saturday, but they made their debut count with a historic victory that propelled them to England's top division.

The team beat Durham 46-27 in the Division Two County Championship final, scoring eight tries in front of cheering crowds. After leading 34-12 early in the second half, Cornwall held strong through a tense Durham comeback to seal the win.

The victory marks a remarkable rise for the program. Just four years ago, Cornwall competed in the third tier of women's rugby. Two years ago, Durham knocked them out in the semi-finals.

Star player Michaella Roberts shone brightest, scoring two spectacular tries including one where she caught the ball deep in her own half, burst through Durham's defense, and raced 40 meters to score. The crowd roared as she crossed the line just before halftime.

The match stayed close early on, with both teams trading tries. Durham's Catherine Barrett struck first after six minutes, but Cornwall's Hannah Mills quickly answered back. When Durham captain Jess Clabby scored to make it 12-5, the pressure mounted.

Cornwall responded with power and skill. Roberts muscled over from a five-meter play, then prop Kim Upcott crashed through under the posts to give Cornwall a 17-12 lead after 30 minutes.

The second half brought drama when Roberts received a yellow card, giving Durham a player advantage. They capitalized immediately, scoring three quick tries to cut the lead to just seven points with seven minutes remaining.

But Faith Rowe steadied Cornish nerves with a crucial try under the posts, and Abby Masquelier added another in stoppage time to complete the commanding victory.

The Ripple Effect

Head coach Jo Holden emphasized what the performance means beyond just winning. "To actually put on a performance like that so people watching understand that women's game is that good is more important to me than anything," she told BBC Radio Cornwall.

The packed stadium gave the players the homecoming celebration they deserved. Holden praised the crowd's energy and what it meant for her team to experience that level of support at rugby's most famous venue.

The win secures Cornwall's promotion to Division One for 2027, where they'll compete against England's best county teams. For a program that climbed from the third tier in just four years, the future looks bright as Cornish granite.
