Costa Rica Unearths 40,000-Year-Old Mastodon and Sloth Bones

A chance discovery on private property in Costa Rica has unlocked a window into an ancient world where elephant relatives and massive sloths wandered the earth tens of thousands of years ago.

Workers stumbled upon the fossils in Cartago province, east of the capital San José, without even looking for them. What they found turned out to be one of the most significant paleontological discoveries in Costa Rica in decades.

The National Museum announced that researchers have recovered 49 bone pieces so far, including a femur, vertebrae, and ribs from both creatures. Preliminary studies suggest these remains could be anywhere from 10,000 to 40,000 years old, based on geological analysis of the soil layers where they were buried.

The mastodon, a relative of modern elephants, and the giant sloth, ancestor to today's slow-moving tree dwellers with their distinctive curved claws, both thrived in Central America during the Ice Age. These weren't the small sloths we know today but massive ground-dwelling creatures that could weigh several tons.

The Ripple Effect

This discovery does more than add fossils to a museum collection. It helps scientists piece together how ancient animals adapted to climate changes and migrated across continents during periods when the world looked dramatically different than it does today.

For Costa Rica, a country known more for its rainforests and biodiversity than its fossil record, this find puts it on the paleontological map. The accidental nature of the discovery also suggests there may be more prehistoric treasures waiting beneath the soil.

Culture and Youth Minister Jorge Rodríguez confirmed the fossils will be exhibited at the National Museum, giving Costa Ricans and visitors alike a chance to connect with creatures that walked their land millennia before humans arrived. Researchers continue excavating the site, hopeful that more bones remain hidden in the layers of earth.
