Costa Rica's Rachel Agüero, 20, Wins Historic Surf Gold

Rachel Agüero Cabezas rode two perfect waves into the history books this week, becoming the first Costa Rican surfer ever to win gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

The 20-year-old claimed the women's shortboard title at Playa Encuentro in the Dominican Republic, beating Barbados' Chelsea Tuach with a score of 10.50 to 7.33. Agüero took the lead in the opening minutes and never let go, posting two solid waves graded 5.83 and 4.67.

Her path to gold included an upset victory over Nicaragua's Candelaria Resano, an Olympian and world championship medalist. Agüero beat her 12.57 to 11.33 in the fourth round, proving she could handle the pressure of facing favorites.

The win caps an incredible season for the young athlete who lives and trains at Playa Hermosa de Jacó. Just weeks before the Games, she secured her second consecutive national Open championship at the same beach where she hones her craft.

The Ripple Effect

Agüero's gold represents more than one athlete's achievement. It signals the arrival of Costa Rican surfing on the regional stage after years of building momentum.

The country had never won a surfing gold at these Games until now. Costa Rica's only previous medals came in 2023 when two surfers earned bronze in longboard events.

This year brought more success beyond Agüero's historic win. Sam Reidy captured bronze in men's shortboard, marking Costa Rica's first medal in that category at the Games.

The surge reflects a deeper trend in Costa Rican surfing. Lía Díaz recently became the first Central American surfer to qualify for the World Surf League's Longboard Tour, while Leilani McGonagle earned a spot on the Challenger Series, just one tier below surfing's elite level.

The national federation has turned its focus toward Olympic qualifying events for Los Angeles 2028, where surfing will return to the program. With young talent like Agüero leading the way, Costa Rica's surfing future looks bright.

For Agüero, the journey continues with the Pan American Games in Lima next year, followed by the Olympic qualifying calendar. At just 20, she's already proven she belongs among the region's best, and the waves ahead look promising.
