Couple Gets Engaged at Bruno Mars Show, Wins Free Tickets

When John Cuyugan dropped to one knee during Bruno Mars' "Marry You" at Rogers Stadium, he was living out a dream he'd had for years. The wildest part? His partner Itzel Olea had imagined the exact same proposal song long before they met.

The Etobicoke couple got engaged last Sunday during Mars' first Toronto concert, surrounded by thousands of cheering fans. A video of the moment quickly spread across TikTok, racking up over 330,000 views and hundreds of excited comments from strangers celebrating their joy.

Cuyugan had bought the ring back in December and originally planned a Valentine's Day proposal. But when Bruno Mars announced his Toronto dates, he knew he had to wait for the perfect moment.

"Way back I thought to myself, 'If I'm going to propose to someone, it's going to be this song,'" Cuyugan said. "It's like destiny."

The couple first met at Square One mall in Mississauga in 2022. When they talked about their future wedding two years ago, Olea mentioned wanting a proposal during "Marry You." Cuyugan realized they'd both pictured the same moment before their paths ever crossed.

Despite months of planning, Cuyugan nearly forgot to propose because he was so caught up enjoying the concert. His nerves vanished when he saw Olea's reaction.

"She was so emotional, I was so emotional, and it felt like the whole crowd was celebrating with us," he said. "It felt surreal."

Bruno Mars' music has been the soundtrack to this couple's entire relationship. Their 11-month-old daughter is already dancing to his songs at home, and last weekend marked Cuyugan's first time seeing his idol perform live.

As a Filipino Canadian, Cuyugan felt extra pride watching Mars, who is half Filipino. He's been listening to the artist's music for 15 years, making the proposal even more meaningful.

The viral moment brought another surprise. Live Nation reached out and gifted the couple free tickets and merchandise for Mars' final Toronto show on May 31. They'll get to relive the magic one more time.

"I really didn't expect this video would go viral," Cuyugan said. "This was really an honour for me."
