Couple Lives on Cruise Ships for Half a Nursing Home Cost
Nancy and Robert Houchens sold their 3,000-square-foot home and now live full-time on cruise ships for roughly $4,000 a month. It's half the price of assisted living and comes with zero cooking, cleaning, or home maintenance.
When retirement planning means downsizing your entire life to fit in a pickup truck, you know something creative is happening.
Nancy and Robert Houchens from Charlottesville, Virginia, made a bold move when they retired. They sold nearly everything they owned and decided to spend their golden years hopping from cruise ship to cruise ship.
"We had a 3,000-square-foot home full of furniture, and everything we own now would fit in the back of a pickup truck," Robert told USA Today. They kept only a small Florida condo for when they're too old to cruise and stored their remaining belongings in half of a 10x10 storage unit.
The financial math actually works in their favor. Nursing homes typically cost $8,000 to $10,000 per month for one person, while the Houchens spend roughly $4,000 monthly for both of them to live on cruise ships.

"It's much cheaper than a nursing home or assisted living," Robert explained to the Miami Herald. Their budget covers food, gratuities, and everything else they need, and they don't pay for car expenses or home maintenance.
The couple approaches cruise booking differently than vacationers. "We look for the best deal, not the destination," Nancy said. They book cruises back to back to avoid wasting money on expensive hotels between ships.
Life at sea has eliminated everyday stresses. "It's been great. I don't cook. I don't clean," Nancy shared. Their phone plan covers most destinations for 25 cents per minute with free internet and texting.
The Bright Side: Last July, the Houchens celebrated their 1,000th day sailing with Carnival Cruise Line since the 1980s. CBS News reports that "cruise retirements" are growing more popular in 2025 as others discover this affordable alternative to traditional retirement living.
For the Houchens, it's about more than just saving money. "We cruise Carnival because of the people," Robert told Travel Pulse. "It isn't the destinations for us anymore, it's the journey, and the biggest part of the journey is the people."
They've built a community of friends at sea while living their retirement dream at a fraction of the cost most Americans pay for senior care.
