A South Carolina couple's disastrous World Cup ticket experience turned into an unforgettable adventure when they vented about it to a stranger at an airport bar. That stranger happened to be the Prime Minister of Curaçao.

Christian and Mathi Ott flew from Myrtle Beach to Houston with one goal: watch tiny Caribbean nation Curaçao make its World Cup debut against Germany. An hour before kickoff, their dreams crashed when an email arrived saying their resale tickets wouldn't work.
The couple scrambled outside the stadium, hoping for last-minute ticket releases. Eventually they paid a premium for replacement seats and made it inside, but the stress and extra expense had turned their dream trip into a nightmare.
Their flight home got delayed the next day, so they headed to an airport bar to wait. There, they struck up conversation with a friendly couple and launched into the full story of their ticket disaster.
Then the man's wife said something to him. He turned back to the Otts with unexpected news.
"He looks at her, then back at us, and says, 'Well, I'm the prime minister of Curaçao,'" Mathi told WPDE-TV. The sympathetic stranger was Gilmar Pisas, leader of the very country whose team they'd traveled to support.

Pisas was apparently touched that two Americans had gone to such lengths for his nation's debut. He made them an offer on the spot: pick an upcoming Curaçao game, Ecuador or Ivory Coast, all expenses paid.
Mathi called her mom for advice. Her response was immediate: "Of course you're going."
Sunny's Take
What happened next was the polar opposite of that parking lot panic. Pisas flew them to Kansas City, where they spent time with his family and friends and scored an invitation to a private watch party at the InterContinental for a Netherlands match.
"Honestly, we looked like we didn't belong there," Mathi said. "We were surrounded by CEOs and people worth millions of dollars." The hosts bought them food and drinks while they watched the game, and the prime minister came down to greet everyone personally.
Then came the main event: the actual Curaçao match. They took an Uber, waited through security, browsed the FIFA store, and found their seats with an incredible view.
"The fans were amazing, dancing, chanting, and having a great time," Mathi said. The weekend that started with a canceled ticket gut punch ended with a story almost too perfect to believe.
Sometimes the worst moment of a trip is exactly what puts you in the right place at the right time.
