Two Indian entrepreneurs smiling, founders of Wandering Jane travel startup for women

Cousins Launch Travel Startup for Solo Women in India

🦸 Hero Alert

Two Bengaluru cousins created Wandering Jane, a travel company connecting solo female travelers with trained local guides and women-owned businesses across India and beyond. They've already helped over 250 women explore the world safely.

Growing up as the child of two Army officers, Garima Pande fell in love with exploring new places and understanding different cultures. But after nearly a decade in corporate life, she realized her true calling was helping other women experience that same freedom.

In 2017, Garima quit her job and teamed up with her cousin Akshat Sharma to launch Wandering Jane in Bengaluru. The startup creates customized travel itineraries specifically designed for solo female travelers and women's groups.

"Whenever my cousin and I sat down, we would discuss how even today, many women are not allowed to travel freely," Garima says. "I was fortunate enough to have travelled so much, but I know many who don't even get a chance to."

The company connects travelers with certified "local experts" who receive special training on making women feel safe and comfortable during their trips. Around 85 percent of their 500 local experts are women themselves.

But Wandering Jane goes beyond just safety. The company deliberately partners with women-owned businesses at every step of the journey.

"Ninety percent of the businesses we support are women-owned, right from homestays and restaurants to activities such as yoga and boat rides," Garima explains. This approach creates economic opportunities for women entrepreneurs while supporting women travelers.

The Ripple Effect

Every trip through Wandering Jane creates a chain reaction of empowerment. Solo female travelers gain confidence and independence while women business owners across India earn income and recognition. The model proves that safety and adventure can coexist.

The startup now offers itineraries throughout India and internationally, including Vietnam, the Maldives, Bhutan, Bali, and parts of Europe like Croatia, Spain, and Ireland. So far, they've hosted over 250 solo women travelers from across the country.

For women who've been told travel is too dangerous or inappropriate, Wandering Jane offers something revolutionary: the freedom to explore the world on their own terms.
