Covington Invites Volunteers to Nurture Young Trees Oct 17

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for your community fits into a Saturday morning.

Covington, Kentucky is inviting residents to spend 90 minutes caring for the city's young street trees on October 17. The free volunteer event runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m., with participants meeting at Latonia Christian Church parking lot on Decoursey Avenue.

Volunteers will work alongside Urban Forestry staff spreading mulch, staking trees, and removing protective tubes from trees that have outgrown them. These simple tasks make a huge difference for saplings trying to establish roots in urban environments.

The event celebrates Tree Week in Kentucky and reflects Covington's commitment to building a greener future. Street trees cool neighborhoods, clean air, and create welcoming spaces where communities gather.

No experience is necessary, and no registration is required. Just show up ready to get a little dirty in clothes and shoes appropriate for outdoor work.

The Ripple Effect

Every tree cared for during this event will grow to provide decades of benefits. Mature street trees can reduce summer temperatures by up to 10 degrees, filter pollutants from the air, and increase property values throughout neighborhoods.

The young trees volunteers will nurture on October 17 could live for 50 years or more. That means today's helpers are giving a gift not just to their city, but to their grandchildren's generation.

Community tree care events also strengthen neighborhoods in immediate ways. Neighbors meet while working side by side, creating connections that last long after the mulch is spread.

The Covington Urban Forestry Board and City Urban Forestry Division organize ongoing programs to ensure the city's tree canopy stays healthy and growing. Events like this one make that work possible while showing residents they have the power to shape their environment.

Interested participants can find more details on the event's Facebook page. The city welcomes everyone willing to spend a Saturday morning investing in Covington's green future.
