Creative Tech Founder's Family Donates $385K to Students

When tech visionary Sim Wong Hoo passed away in 2023, his family knew exactly how to honor his memory: by helping students who need it most.

On June 7, the family of the Creative Technology founder donated $385,000 to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund. The gift came during the launch of a new biography celebrating Sim's remarkable life, from his kampung childhood to becoming Singapore's youngest billionaire.

Ernest Sim, the late entrepreneur's nephew and current Creative Technology CEO, presented the check at Woodlands Regional Library. Over 250 people attended the event to celebrate a man who changed Singapore's tech landscape forever.

"We want to continue to help students, so they can thrive in their studies," Ernest Sim explained. "It's a challenging world out there and everybody should be given a chance to excel."

Sim Wong Hoo built Creative Technology from the ground up in 1981. His Sound Blaster sound cards put Singapore on the global tech map, and by age 45, he had become the nation's youngest billionaire.

But his business success never overshadowed his generous spirit. In 2001, just months after the pocket money fund launched, Sim personally donated $584,000 to match every dollar raised so far.

The Ripple Effect

That same commitment to education now flows through his family. The $385,000 donation joins a growing wave of support that has helped more than 220,000 children and young people since 2000, distributing over $100 million total.

Each dollar goes directly to students from low-income families, ensuring they have the resources they need to focus on learning instead of worrying about basic expenses. For many children, it's the difference between struggling and thriving.

Ernest Sim said attendees remembered his uncle as "a gentle, nice person who has done a lot of good things for the society and his company." The new biography captures those intimate memories from family and friends, preserving his legacy for future generations.
