Exhausted cyclist Alex McCormack completing his seven-day world record attempt in Koblenz, Germany

🦸 Hero Alert

A British ultra-distance cyclist just pedaled farther in one week than the entire Tour de France, surviving on four hours of sleep and 14,000 calories a day. Alex McCormack's jaw-dropping achievement shows what the human body can accomplish when determination meets preparation.

Alex McCormack spent seven days answering one simple question: how far can one person ride a bike in a week? The answer turned out to be 2,378 miles, a new world record that pushed the limits of human endurance.

The 28-year-old from North Yorkshire, England, completed his record-breaking ride on April 2nd in Koblenz, Germany. He pedaled an average of 18.5 hours each day along a flat route by the Moselle river, leaving barely four hours for sleep, eating, and recovery.

McCormack beat the previous seven-day distance record by just under eight miles. His final distance of 2,378 miles exceeded the entire 2026 Tour de France route by more than 40 miles.

The physical toll was staggering. On his final day, McCormack needed a bungee cord to hold his head up because his neck muscles had given out. He battled snow, hail, and rain while burning through 14,000 calories daily.

His daily menu reads like a competitive eating challenge. McCormack consumed six peanut butter brioche buns, four chicken and rice burritos, multiple bowls of pasta, and endless gels and energy drinks just to keep moving.

Sleep became a luxury he couldn't afford. Some days he'd finish riding at 5 AM, grab a quick nap, then start again just two hours later. His longest single ride stretched over 25 hours on the final day.

Why This Inspires

McCormack isn't just chasing records for bragging rights. This brutal week served as training for the Triple Crown of US ultra-distance races happening this summer. He's already won major races across Europe and set a Double Everesting record in 2025.

His support crew worked around the clock to keep him fueled and moving. Team member Harry Dowdney said the biggest challenge was waking Alex after painfully short naps and forcing him to keep eating and drinking.

The record will be officially ratified by the World Ultra Cycling Association, with a Guinness World Records application to follow.

McCormack's philosophy is simple: "I've always wanted to try and find where my limits lie." This week, he found them a little farther down the road than anyone expected.
