Dad Caddies as Son Wins US Amateur Golf Championship

Jack Whaley's dad almost missed the moment that changed both their lives. Andy Whaley had booked a flight home to England last Saturday, expecting his son would miss the cut at the US Amateur Championship.

Instead, the 22-year-old from Doncaster kept winning. On Sunday at Merion Golf Club, Jack defeated American Jay Leng Jr. 4&3 in the final, becoming only the third Englishman ever to claim the title.

His reward? Automatic entries to the 2027 Masters, US Open, and The Open at St Andrews, plus a spot on the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team.

But for Jack, the real prize was sharing it with his dad. Andy had to scramble to change his flight and extend his car rental as his son advanced through the tournament rounds.

"It's probably the best thing me and my dad will probably ever experience together," Jack told BBC Sport after the final putt dropped. The two shared a tearful embrace on the green that captured what years of early mornings, golf lessons, and tournament drives had built toward.

Andy joked afterward that he's now "retired" from caddying with a perfect 1-0 record. Jack wasn't about to argue.

The journey to Merion wasn't easy. Just 12 months earlier, Jack missed the cut at the same tournament. He entered this year ranked 90th in world amateur golf, hardly a favorite.

Why This Inspires

Golf demands enormous financial sacrifice from families. Andy worked long hours to fund his son's lessons and tournament fees while supporting Jack's brother and mom. Jack admits he didn't fully appreciate it at the time.

"As you get older, you understand the time that he's put into it," Jack reflected. "It's nice to be able to appreciate it now and really say 'thank you' to him."

The golf world took notice. Justin Rose, who won the 2013 US Open at the same Merion course, FaceTimed Jack right after his victory. US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and his brother Alex, who also won the US Amateur together, sent congratulations too.

Jack's phone hasn't stopped buzzing with messages, but none likely meant more than the hug from his dad and the chance to finally give back for all those years of support.
