Girls hockey players in action during Rink Rebels tournament in Fredericton arena

🦸 Hero Alert

When firefighter Doug Grandy noticed his daughters had fewer hockey opportunities than boys in Fredericton, he did something about it. Now hundreds of girls are playing hockey in programs designed just for them.

Doug Grandy saw his two daughters struggling to find the same hockey opportunities available to boys in Fredericton, New Brunswick. As a firefighter and father to Blakely, 12, and Ally, 14, he decided the solution was simple: create what didn't exist.

In 2024, Grandy and his best friend Ryan Burns launched Rink Rebels Female Hockey Organization. The program offers no-pressure, fun-focused hockey events and tournaments for girls of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to experienced players looking for a more inclusive environment.

The response stunned them. Hundreds of girls immediately signed up for programs that run during spring and summer months, with the biggest event being the Friendship Tournament held each August.

The inspiration runs deep for Grandy. His sister Brooxxi was a talented hockey player who spent years playing with boys because no girls' teams existed. She eventually left the sport due to lack of support and welcoming spaces.

"She was captain of our team and at the time when we were younger, none of this was in place," Grandy said. "It always stuck with me, and it pulled my heart a little."

Today, Rink Rebels operates out of Willie O'Ree Place, named after Fredericton's own Willie O'Ree, the first Black player in NHL history. Volunteers run the programs, which are funded by sponsors and city support, with Ryan's daughter Ava serving as both coach and mentor.

Why This Inspires

Grandy's work earned him a nomination for the Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award, which recognizes individuals who positively impact their community through hockey. He's one of three Canadian finalists, with voting open through May 24.

The award carries special meaning. "To be named around Willie's name, knowing his background, being from where he's from, is magical," Grandy said. "There's not a day that goes by in our city that I don't say his name, because we're always at his rink."

The winner receives $30,000 for a charity of their choice, while all finalists receive $10,000. But for Grandy, the real prize is already happening: girls who might have quit sports in their teens are staying in the game, building confidence and finding where they belong.

His mission echoes O'Ree's legacy of breaking barriers and creating equality, one ice time at a time.
