DC's AI Job Board Helps 83K Workers Find New Careers
A new AI-powered job platform created to help displaced federal workers has already connected 83,000 people with over 65,000 job openings across the DC region. The tool is now preparing workers for future shifts in the job market through free AI skills training.
When federal layoffs hit the DC region, local leaders launched an AI job board that's already helping tens of thousands of workers land on their feet.
Talent Capital AI went live as a direct response to federal workforce cuts earlier this year. The platform was designed with displaced government workers in mind, but it quickly became something bigger: a bridge to help the entire region prepare for tomorrow's job market.
The numbers tell an encouraging story. Since launch, over 100,000 people have used the site, with 83,000 active users currently matching with 65,000 job listings. That's real people finding real opportunities during a tough transition.
Paul Kihn, DC's Deputy Secretary for Education, told the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments that the platform is teaching leaders valuable lessons. "What we're learning about how to handle displaced workers and disruptions to the labor market will be very, very important for us all as we look to the next two or three years of AI enablement in our economy," he said.
Healthcare employers are leading the charge with nearly 16,000 open positions on the platform. Engineering roles, especially in cybersecurity, come in second with over 6,600 opportunities available.

Workers from across the region are using the tool. Virginia residents make up 42% of users, Maryland residents account for nearly 40%, and DC residents represent just over 16%.
The Ripple Effect
The platform isn't just connecting people to jobs today. Starting in May, Talent Capital will offer free virtual training in AI foundational skills, project management, and leadership to anyone in the region. No charge, no barriers.
This matters because AI is reshaping every industry. The same tool built to help federal workers is now preparing the entire DC workforce for changes that haven't even arrived yet. When someone searches for a job, the platform can identify skills gaps and connect them directly to free training programs.
Will Lopez, president of BuildWithin, the company behind the platform, said users are increasingly asking about upskilling opportunities. People aren't just looking for any job; they're preparing for careers that will grow with them.
The platform still has room to improve. Right now, it can't track whether job matches actually result in hires because users leave the site to apply elsewhere. Leaders hope employers will eventually post jobs directly on Talent Capital so they can measure real outcomes and make the system even better.
What started as an emergency response to federal layoffs has become a blueprint for helping communities adapt to rapid economic change with hope instead of fear.
