Decatur Nonprofit Raises $410K, Saves Food Program

When the Good Samaritan Inn warned it might have to close its doors, the Decatur community showed up in a big way.

The nonprofit announced this week it has surpassed its $410,000 fundraising goal, securing its future and ensuring daily meals continue for hundreds of neighbors facing food insecurity. The organization had set the ambitious target to sustain operations after warning that without the funds, it might have to shut down programs that have served central Illinois for more than four decades.

"This achievement is a true testament to what is possible when a community refuses to let its neighbors go hungry," said Executive Director Tanya Melendez. The campaign drew support from individuals, businesses, foundations, and community leaders across the region.

The Ripple Effect

The Good Samaritan Inn does more than serve hot meals. For 43 years, it has been a cornerstone of Decatur's food security network, running urban agriculture programs and building partnerships that strengthen the entire local food system.

The fundraising success means those programs can continue expanding. Volunteers and staff work daily to ensure anyone who needs a meal can access one, no questions asked.

Board members, volunteers, and staff played crucial roles in reaching the goal, with many working extra hours to spread the word and connect with potential donors. Their efforts paid off as the community rallied together.

While leaders are celebrating this milestone, they acknowledge the work isn't finished. Many families still face uncertainty about where their next meal will come from, and the organization plans to keep building partnerships and seeking resources to meet ongoing demand.

"Today, we celebrate, a joyful reminder that compassion is one of the most powerful forces in our community," Melendez said. The success not only secures the Inn's immediate future but also reinforces Decatur's commitment to ensuring no neighbor goes hungry.
