Delta State Hiring 700+ Healthcare Workers This Year

✨ Faith Restored

Nigeria's Delta State just approved hiring over 700 medical professionals to staff new hospitals and replace workers who left the country. The jobs span doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and support staff across expanding facilities.

Nigeria's Delta State is tackling its healthcare staffing crisis head-on with the largest medical recruitment drive in years.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved hiring more than 700 healthcare workers to fill critical gaps caused by mass migration of professionals and rapid expansion of medical facilities. Health Commissioner Joseph Onojaeme announced the jobs will be advertised nationally with a transparent, merit-based selection process.

The hiring spree comes as Delta opens major new healthcare infrastructure. The General Hospital in Warri just upgraded to a Central Hospital, while a new Mother and Child Hospital in Ekpan nears completion. A state-of-the-art public health laboratory is also finishing construction, ending the state's reliance on sending COVID-19 samples to Abuja during the pandemic.

The jobs are being distributed strategically across the state's healthcare system. The Hospital Management Board will receive 295 new staff members, while Delta State University Teaching Hospital gets 120 positions. The newly established College of Health Technology in Ovrode will welcome 100 personnel, with Asaba Specialist Hospital and Warri Central Hospital receiving 60 and 12 staff respectively.

Delta is addressing what locals call "Japa syndrome," the wave of Nigerian professionals leaving for opportunities abroad. The government implemented a standing policy to automatically replace departing healthcare workers, helping maintain stability even as trained professionals emigrate.

The Ripple Effect

The recruitment comes alongside major technology investments that will make the new positions even more impactful. Delta purchased three advanced 1.5 Tesla MRI machines using helium-free systems that cost less to maintain than older models.

The state also invested heavily in dialysis infrastructure, slashing treatment costs to as low as 45,000 naira (about $30 USD) at some facilities. Officials say costs could drop even further with additional support programs.

A new psychiatric hospital currently under construction will expand mental health services across the region. The facility will require additional specialized staff beyond the current 700-position announcement.

Open positions will include consultants, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, health technologists, administrators, and support staff. Onojaeme said the initiative aims to improve health outcomes for Delta's growing population while ensuring facilities don't sit empty due to understaffing.

For a state that recently had to ship medical samples hundreds of miles for basic testing, these investments signal a healthcare system finally catching up to its people's needs.
