Derby Vet Attempts 40 Iron Triathlons in 40 Days at Age 40
A veterinarian from Derby is celebrating her 40th birthday by attempting to set a world record: completing 40 consecutive iron-distance triathlons in 40 days. Laura Massey-Pugh is already more than halfway through the grueling challenge, inspiring her community while raising funds for local youth charities.
Some people throw a party for their 40th birthday. Laura Massey-Pugh decided to swim 155 pool lengths, cycle 112 miles, and run a marathon every single day for 40 days straight.
The Derby veterinarian started her world record attempt on May 6th, tackling what may be one of the most demanding birthday celebrations ever conceived. Each day begins at 7:00 AM in the pool at Etwall Leisure Centre and doesn't end until around 11:30 PM after completing a full marathon.
"I'm 40 this year so I was looking for a challenge for my birthday," Laura explained. "Yes, it's a bit nuts."
The challenge has tested her in unexpected ways. Within the first week, she faced a 30-degree temperature swing, from hail pelting her arms during bike rides to sweltering 35-degree heat. Those extreme weather days have been the hardest part of an already extraordinary feat.
But Laura isn't new to extreme endurance. She already holds a world record with her husband Stevie for being the fastest cyclists to circumnavigate the globe on a tandem bike, covering 18,000 miles in 180 days in 2022.

The Ripple Effect
What started as a personal birthday challenge has become a rallying point for Laura's entire community. Members from Derby Triathlon Club and local running groups have joined her on bike rides and marathon runs, refusing to let her suffer alone through the 16-hour daily grind.
"So many people have got behind this," Laura said. "They have come out on the bike, they've come out on the run and I just think 'wow' I've got to keep going."
Chris Redding, a coach at Derby Triathlon Club, sees Laura's impact extending beyond the asphalt. "She's got this ability to just keep going and it's inspiring," he said. "People are getting more active, they are getting involved and supporting it."
The challenge is also raising money for YMCA Derbyshire and AYUP, two charities supporting young people across the region. Paul Taylor from YMCA Derbyshire believes Laura's example shows young people what's possible when you commit to something bigger than yourself.
Dean Jackson from HUUB, the clothing firm supporting Laura's attempt, works with Olympic athletes but has never seen anything quite like this. "Whenever you see her, she's always smiling," he marveled. "She's just so happy with it and she's just on a mission."
To set the official Guinness World Record for a female athlete, Laura needs to complete 33 consecutive iron-distance triathlons. She's keeping detailed logs and having volunteers witness each segment to verify the record.
When Laura finally crosses the finish line on July 1st, her actual 40th birthday, she has one simple plan: "I will not be doing an Ironman... I will be drinking and eating pizza!"
