Detroit Teacher Breaks Record With 67 Years in Classroom

Beverly Hannett-Price walked into her first classroom in 1958, fresh out of college with a teaching degree and a passion for English. Sixty-seven years later, the 90-year-old is still showing up every day at Detroit Country Day School, now holding the Guinness World Record for longest-serving female language teacher.

Her former students read like a Hollywood and business who's who. Actor Robin Williams, Microsoft's former CEO Steve Ballmer, Los Angeles Clippers owner, and Emmy-winning actor Courtney B. Vance all sat in her classroom. But for Hannett-Price, the real measure of success isn't fame, it's connection.

Vance flew in to celebrate her record-breaking achievement at a special school assembly in February. He shared a story that reveals why thousands of students never forgot their English teacher. When his father died by suicide, Hannett-Price didn't just send a card or flowers. She came to his home and sat with his grieving mother.

"That's when I realized this is more than just a student-teacher relationship. This is a life relationship," Vance told The Detroit News. He described her as someone who befriended him, filled in gaps from his public school education, and became a blessing to his entire family.

Hannett-Price earned her Master's degree in English and has taught in Alabama and Florida over the decades. But she's never taken a year off from teaching, never switched careers, never wavered from her calling. School officials confirmed she maintained continuous employment for all 67 years.

Why This Inspires

At an age when most people have been retired for decades, Hannett-Price still loves walking into school every morning. She describes education not as work but as a gift, an opportunity she cherishes daily. Her commitment shows that finding your purpose and sticking with it can create ripples that last generations.

She told reporters she has no retirement plans. "I have never left this building or any school building that I taught in ever wanting to do anything else with my life but to teach children," she said. For someone who's been teaching since Eisenhower was president, that kind of enthusiasm is contagious.

Vance summed up what makes her special: "She's internally excited about life and everyone she meets. Everyday for her is a wonderful day and she reminds us all that life is a gift."

Sixty-seven years in and Beverly Hannett-Price is still teaching the most important lesson of all: passion doesn't have an expiration date.
