Devon Couple Celebrates 65th Wedding Anniversary
After 65 years of shared devotion, an 87-year-old Devon couple received a heartwarming surprise anniversary party from their loving community. Maurice and Mary Glover celebrated their blue sapphire milestone alongside generations of family, lifelong friends, and a royal letter.
Sixty-five years of shared devotion culminated in a joyful village celebration that two lifelong sweethearts will never forget. Family and friends recently gathered at The London Inn in Morchard Bishop to surprise Maurice and Mary Glover on their blue sapphire anniversary.
The 87-year-old couple first crossed paths at a local dance hall when they were just 18 years old. They soon embarked on their first date to a motorcycle scramble meeting, traveling together in a classic Austin 10.
Their lifelong journey officially began on October 28, 1961, at St Mary’s Church in Morchard Bishop, followed by a brief honeymoon in Torquay. Soon after, the ambitious pair began creating a life defined by hard work, resourcefulness, and mutual care.
Maurice served in Cyprus with the Devon and Dorsets before returning home to pursue his passion for carpentry and building. He spent decades building houses across Mid Devon, often spending evenings and weekends constructing his family's own homes from the ground up.

Mary brought equal dedication to their partnership through her skilled work sewing church embroidery in Exeter, crafting dresses, and supporting local shops. Together, they embraced adventure, even living in a caravan and a wooden shed while Maurice constructed their long-term family residence.
Beyond their own careers, the couple dedicated their lives to lifting up the next generation. Alongside raising two daughters and watching three grandchildren grow, Maurice and Mary opened their home and fostered four children over the years.
Their extraordinary milestone drew celebration from across the United Kingdom, including a special royal delivery. The couple received a commemorative letter from King Charles III and Queen Camilla congratulating them on reaching sixty-five years of marriage.
Sunny's Take
Maurice and Mary show us how patience, shared labor, and unwavering generosity create an unbreakable bond. Their willingness to welcome foster children and construct their own shelter reveals a deeply selfless kind of love.
May their beautiful 65-year romance remind us that true joy grows when we build a foundation of kindness together.
