Dish Soap Frees Girl Trapped 4 Hours in Dartmoor Rocks

Shannon was exploring Hound Tor in Dartmoor, Devon during a school trip when her foot slipped into a gap between massive granite boulders. For more than four hours, the 11-year-old remained stuck while emergency crews worked to free her.

Cave rescue leader Olly Rees had a lightbulb moment on his way to the scene. He stopped at a gas station and grabbed a bottle of Fairy washing up liquid, thinking the slippery soap might work where brute force couldn't.

The Devon Cave Rescue Organisation specializes in tight spaces, but Shannon's leg was wedged so firmly that traditional tools seemed like the only option. Other team members were already bringing equipment to widen the gap or even break the rock itself.

Instead, rescuers applied the dish soap liberally to Shannon's trapped leg. The simple household product created just enough lubrication to slide her free without injury.

"We applied it liberally to the leg just to try and get it as slippery as possible to help it to come out," Rees told the BBC. "It made all the difference."

Shannon, who admitted she didn't know if she'd get out and wanted her mum, walked away completely unhurt. The rescue team signed the bottle and gave it to her as a souvenir of her unexpected adventure.
