😊 Feel Good

Nearly 600 Central Florida children learned life-saving water safety skills at Walt Disney World's Typhoon Lagoon, with Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel leading the charge. For many kids, it was their first swim lesson and first visit to a water park.

Nearly 600 children splashed into summer learning skills that could one day save their lives at Walt Disney World's Typhoon Lagoon.

The theme park hosted the World's Largest Swimming Lesson on June 25, welcoming kids from five Central Florida nonprofits for a day of water safety education and fun. Disney has participated in the annual event since 2011, but this year brought an extra splash of excitement.

Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel surprised the young swimmers with a hands-on lesson in water safety. Alongside 100 Disney lifeguards, she taught kids the fundamentals of staying safe in the water while keeping the atmosphere light and encouraging.

"It's not just about going out there and winning medals, but really just giving people the confidence to be safe in the water," Manuel said. She has made water safety education in underserved communities a personal mission, particularly focusing on communities of color where swimming opportunities are often limited.

For Adam Hayes, attending with the Boys & Girls Club, the event marked his first swim lesson ever. "I've learned a bunch of moves, and since I'm in Florida, there's a bunch of water everywhere," he said, beaming with his newfound confidence.

The Ripple Effect

In a state surrounded by water, where drowning remains a leading cause of death for young children, this event creates waves far beyond one summer day. Each child who gains comfort and competence in the water becomes safer, and those skills last a lifetime.

Tajiana Ancora-Brown, director of Walt Disney World external affairs, emphasized the lasting impact. "Just giving them that confidence and that important lifetime reminder of these important safety tips will stay with them, but we get to do that with fun as well," she said.

After mastering the basics, the kids got to enjoy the entire water park. For many, it was their first time experiencing a water park, transforming an educational moment into an unforgettable adventure.

Six hundred children left Typhoon Lagoon that day not just with memories of slides and wave pools, but with knowledge that could save their lives and the confidence to enjoy Florida's waters safely.
