DIV Fund Opens $1.5M Grants for African Innovators

African entrepreneurs with tested solutions to development challenges can now access serious funding to take their innovations from pilot projects to continental scale.

The Development Innovation Ventures Fund 2026 is accepting applications on a rolling basis from startups, nonprofits, and research institutions across the continent. The fund provides grants ranging from $200,000 to $1.5 million for innovations that have moved past the idea stage and shown real-world results.

What makes this opportunity different is its focus on evidence and impact. The fund isn't looking for interesting concepts but for solutions that already work and can prove they're cost-effective. Applicants need to show how their innovation solves a specific problem, what it costs to deliver, and how it can sustainably reach over one million people.

The funding works in three stages. Stage one provides up to $200,000 for testing innovations that have moved beyond prototypes. Stage two offers up to $500,000 for evaluating impact and preparing for growth. Stage three provides up to $1.5 million for proven solutions ready to expand significantly.

African innovators working in healthcare, education, agriculture, and digital solutions are particularly well-positioned for this fund. The program has previously supported innovations across developing markets that demonstrate measurable results at costs that make large-scale adoption realistic.

Eligible applicants include private companies, social enterprises, universities, and technical assistance providers from any country, as long as the solution addresses challenges in low or middle-income countries. The catch is that individual founders without a legally incorporated organization cannot apply directly.

Projects can receive funding for up to five years, with grants tied to specific milestones rather than general operating expenses. This structure helps organizations build the kind of evidence needed to attract government partnerships, private investment, or philanthropic support beyond the initial grant period.
