When diver Pall Sigurdsson spotted a tiny octopus hiding in a plastic cup off Indonesia's coast, he knew the creature was in serious danger.

Coconut octopuses are born with an instinct to protect themselves inside coconut or clam shells. But this little one had mistaken human trash for a safe home, and that mistake could have been deadly.

Sigurdsson and his diving companions spent nearly their entire air supply on a patient rescue mission in 2018. The flimsy cup offered almost no protection, and worse, a predator like an eel or flounder might swallow the cup whole with the octopus still inside, killing both animals.
