Doctor Adopts Teen, Discovers His Mother in 40-Year-Old Photo

Dr. James Wittig always joked he'd love to start fatherhood with a 13-year-old instead of a baby. When he saw a Facebook post in 2015 about a teenage boy who'd lost both parents, he knew it was his chance.

Wittig, an orthopedic surgeon at Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey, reached out immediately. The post came from a former patient he'd treated for bone cancer in the 1980s. She was searching for someone to care for Ronnie, the son of a friend who had died.

The boy's father had also recently passed away, leaving Ronnie alone. Wittig drove to northern Virginia to meet him, and within days, Ronnie chose to live with the doctor. Two weeks later, legal guardianship was transferred.

But the story takes an incredible turn. A few months after Ronnie moved in, Wittig was reviewing a medical photograph he'd used in teaching presentations for over 40 years. The image showed two women who'd both battled osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, but received different treatments.

He suddenly recognized one of the women. It was Ronnie's mother.

Wittig had never met or treated her, only the other patient in the photo whose limb he'd helped save. Yet here he was, raising her son decades later, connected through a photograph he'd carried through his entire career.

The coincidence convinced Wittig their connection was meant to be. "I see this whole thing as a synchronicity," he told PEOPLE magazine. He describes Ronnie as "one of the strongest and kindest and most courageous kids."

Now in his mid-twenties, Ronnie completed Seton Hall Prep and welding school. While the formal adoption paperwork remains incomplete, Wittig says their bond transcends legal documents. Being a father has been "so fulfilling" for the surgeon, who finally got his wish to raise a son.

The relationship goes both ways. Wittig credits Ronnie with teaching him "kindness, compassion, empathy, love, joy, and happiness." On their anniversary six years after meeting, Wittig posted on Instagram: "You are amazing to me and my hero!"

Wittig hopes their story inspires other older, single adults who want children to realize it's never too late. Sometimes the family you're meant to have finds you in the most unexpected ways.
