Doctor Drives 7 Hours, Captures Stunning Blood Moon Eclipse

When Dr. Tharuman Gnanamoorthy watched storm clouds roll over his original destination on March 3, he made a split-second choice that would define his night: abandon weeks of careful planning and drive seven hours across Malaysia to chase a blood moon.

The pediatrician from Seremban had spent weeks preparing to photograph the total lunar eclipse. He rehearsed his dual-camera setup, studied weather patterns, and even tried teaching his smart telescope to see through clouds (spoiler: it didn't work).

As eclipse day arrived, his meticulously planned 280-mile trip north to Alor Setar looked doomed. Weather forecasts showed thick cloud cover rolling in over the western coast. With sunset approaching fast, Gnanamoorthy pivoted, setting his GPS for Kota Bharu on the opposite coast, 310 miles away.

The cross-country drive left no margin for error. He had to arrive before sunset to scout locations and set up his Sony A7 III camera and Seestar S50 telescope before moonrise.

He found his spot at Pantai Pak Amat, a stretch of beach with a clear view over the South China Sea. Then came the hardest part: waiting.

Moonrise came and went, the eclipsed moon hidden behind a frustrating wall of low clouds on the horizon. Gnanamoorthy stood alone on the deserted beach, watching precious minutes of totality slip away while the moon remained invisible.

The blood moon emerged in full glory, bathed in the orange-red light of every sunrise and sunset on Earth bent through our planet's atmosphere. For a moment, Gnanamoorthy simply stood stunned by the sight.
