Doctor Turns 22 Acres of Rocky Land Into 40,000-Tree Forest

When Dr. Shankar Lal Garg's dream of building a college collapsed due to lack of funds, he could have walked away from the rocky 22 acres he'd purchased near Indore. Instead, he decided to grow a forest where most people saw only stone.

The land near Mhow was the kind of property developers avoid. There was barely any soil, almost no water, and rocks everywhere you looked.

Garg, working as a college principal at the time, had bought the property in 2007 with plans for an educational institution. When money ran out, most people would have listed it for sale and moved on.

Around 2015, Garg started planting instead. He began with hardy species like neem, peepal and lemon trees, hauling in soil where the ground was too rocky to support roots.

The work was slow and tedious. He acclimatized saplings before planting them and watered carefully so roots would grow deep rather than staying shallow and weak.

Over the years, the diversity exploded. Today, reports indicate the site includes teak, banyan, sandalwood, bamboo, fruit trees and even species like avocado, olive and dragon fruit.

In 2019, an accidental fire destroyed nearly 1,000 trees. Garg replanted and kept going.

The Ripple Effect

Keshar Parvat now stands as proof that degraded land doesn't have to stay degraded. The transformation aligns with India's Green India Mission goals of restoring landscapes, conserving water and rebuilding soil health in damaged areas.

What makes this story remarkable isn't just the 40,000 trees. It's the persistence behind each one, the daily watering in scorching heat, the hauling of soil up rocky slopes, the replanting after disaster.

Garg's forest also offers a template for other landowners sitting on difficult properties. Rocky doesn't mean useless, and barren doesn't mean permanent.

The exact tree count comes from media reports rather than official surveys, but locals and visitors confirm the dramatic change. What was once a forgotten hillock is now a living landscape that birds, insects and neighboring communities can enjoy.

Sometimes the best educational institutions aren't buildings at all, and a failed plan can teach more than a successful one ever would.
