Doctors Save 21-Year-Old's Leg After Metal Rod Pierces It

When a 21-year-old motorcyclist was struck by a car near Vasoli Phata, India, he fell into a roadside gutter where a sharp metal rod pierced completely through his right leg. The rod entered through his calf and exited just below his knee, creating a potentially limb-threatening injury.

The accident happened on March 13 while the young man sat on his stationary bike. After the car collision sent him tumbling, the metal rod became lodged through his entire lower leg in what doctors would later describe as a critical penetrating injury.

A private hospital initially treated him but quickly referred him to Sassoon General Hospital in Pune for specialized care. When he arrived with the rod still in his leg, the surgical team knew they had minutes to act to save the limb.

Doctors immediately gave him antibiotics and tetanus treatment before rushing him to surgery. Under spinal anesthesia, Dr. Kirankumar Jadhav and Dr. Priyanka Salunkhe performed the delicate procedure to extract the metal rod without causing further damage to nerves, blood vessels, or muscle tissue.
