Dog Found 1,000 Miles Away After 2 Years Missing

When Clark Township Police got a call about a stray dog wandering around a New Jersey shopping mall, they had no idea she'd traveled over 1,000 miles and two years to get there.

Koko, a Miniature Schnauzer from Glenn Heights, Texas, went missing from her family two years ago. On March 4, someone spotted her roaming the Clark Commons Shopping Center in Clark, New Jersey, and called the police.

Patrolman Nick Kurus brought Koko to headquarters and tracked down her information through a pet finder service. When he called the number registered to the microchip, Koko's owners were stunned to hear their long-lost dog had been found alive.

The family immediately made plans to fly from Texas to New Jersey. But instead of sending Koko to a shelter while they arranged travel, the Clark Police Department did something special.

For three days, officers became Koko's temporary family. They bathed her, walked her, fed her, and gave her toys and blankets, all purchased with their own money.

Police Director Patrick Grady explained their thinking simply. "As a dog lover amongst many other dog lovers, we were not going to make that puppy wait in a shelter or pound," he said.

The reunion on March 7 brought tears to everyone who witnessed it. Police said Koko ran straight to her mom the moment she arrived, and her parents couldn't stop thanking the officers for their compassion.

The mystery of how Koko traveled from Texas to New Jersey may never be solved. But what matters is that a lost dog found her way back home, thanks to officers who saw beyond their job description and chose kindness.
