A small dog who vanished from Texas two years ago just found her way home after turning up more than a thousand miles away in New Jersey.
On March 4, someone spotted Koko wandering around a shopping mall in Clark, New Jersey, about 1,300 miles from her home in Glenn Heights, Texas. A concerned passerby called the Clark Township Police Department, and Officer Nick Kurus brought the little dog back to headquarters.
The department tracked down Koko's family through a pet finder service connected to her microchip. When Kurus called with the news, Koko's owners were stunned.
They had spent two years searching for answers after she disappeared. Over time, they had nearly given up hope of ever seeing their beloved pet again.
The family immediately booked flights to New Jersey for a reunion on March 7. But instead of sending Koko to a shelter for those three days, the officers made a different choice.

They decided to care for her themselves at the station. Officers bathed her, fed her treats, took her on regular walks, and made sure she had blankets and toys. Some staff members even bought supplies with their own money.
"As a dog lover amongst many other dog lovers, we were not going to make that puppy wait in a shelter or pound," said Police Director Patrick Grady. The officers turned their dispatch room into Koko's temporary home.
Sunny's Take
This story captures everything beautiful about unexpected kindness. These officers didn't have to go above and beyond, but they chose compassion over convenience.
Their decision turned what could have been a stressful kennel stay into three days of love and attention. Koko became an honorary member of the department, receiving the kind of care that made the wait bearable.
When reunion day finally arrived, Koko ran straight to her mom the moment she walked through the door. The grateful family thanked the officers for treating their dog like family.
The goodbye was bittersweet for the officers who had grown attached to their temporary mascot. "We will miss you, Koko," the department wrote on Facebook.
One mystery remains unsolved: no one knows how the adventurous pup traveled from Texas to New Jersey during her two years away. But for now, what matters most is that Koko is finally home.
