Dog Missing 9 Years Reunites with Ohio Family

Sharon Kelly never stopped searching for Saleo, the Shih Tzu who disappeared during a routine bathroom break in 2017. For nearly 10 years, she chased every lead, checked every dog that looked remotely like him, and held onto hope when most would have given up.

The breakthrough came on March 21, when Kelly's granddaughter sent her a Facebook post from the Mahoning County Dog Warden. A black and white dog had been found at Fellows Riverside Gardens, covered in matted, dirty fur that made him almost unrecognizable.

But Kelly's granddaughter saw something familiar. Despite the years and the neglect, she thought the dog might be Saleo.

Kelly knew exactly what to look for. "Well, if that crown underneath that ponytail is there, that is Saleo," she told FOX 8, referring to the distinctive white marking above his eyes.

The next morning, Kelly headed to the shelter with old vet records and photos. The confirmation she'd waited nearly a decade for finally came: this was her Saleo.

"I cried, I was so emotional," Kelly recalled. "The tears, I couldn't hold them back."

The shelter groomed Saleo and shared photos of the reunion on March 23. The transformation was remarkable: the matted, unrecognizable dog was once again the clean, fluffy Shih Tzu Kelly remembered.

What makes this reunion even more touching is what happened when Saleo came home. Without hesitation, he led Kelly along their old walking path near the house, proving that nine years and whatever hardships he endured hadn't erased their bond.

Kelly's persistence through false sightings and dead ends kept the door open for this moment. Her granddaughter's willingness to say "that might be him" when most would have dismissed the matted dog made the miracle possible.

Saleo is now receiving treatment for an eye infection, sinus issues, and dental problems. But he's getting that care in the place he belongs: home with the woman who never stopped looking.

Kelly's message to other pet parents searching for lost animals is simple but powerful: "There are two things we need to survive here on this earth: faith in God and faith in ourselves. Never give up."

Nine years is a long time to hold onto hope, but sometimes miracles just take a while to find their way home.
