Dog Swims Half a Mile to Island, Rescued by Marine Team
A large brown and white dog swept off rocks in New South Wales swam 800 meters to a nearby island before a determined rescue team brought him safely home. Rangers are now searching for the lucky pup's owner.
When a dog was swept off rocks into the ocean at Batemans Bay, Australia, the brave canine didn't give up. Instead, he swam nearly half a mile to reach safety on Snapper Island.
Marine Rescue NSW received urgent calls around noon from witnesses who spotted the dog struggling in the water. Inspector Glenn Sullivan said the dog was already 200 to 300 meters offshore when they got the alert.
A rescue team launched immediately, including a vessel and a jetski that could reach the island's rocky shoreline. They even asked private boats in the area to help watch for the swimming dog.
By the time rescuers arrived, the large brown and white pooch had made it all the way to Snapper Island, about 800 meters from where he started. Sullivan estimates the dog swam for 20 to 30 minutes before reaching land.
"That would have taken a fair degree of stamina to be able to undertake that type of a swim," Sullivan said. Not every dog could have survived such a challenging journey through open water.
Once on the island, the exhausted pup wasn't quite ready to trust his rescuers. Two volunteers spent an hour gently coaxing the frightened dog before he finally let them help.
The team transported him back on the jetski to the waiting boat, then safely to shore. Rescuers even searched nearby Observation Head to make sure no person was in distress, in case the dog had been trying to save someone.
Sunny's Take
Inspector Sullivan said the dog appeared fit and healthy despite his ocean adventure. The rescue team handed him over to Eurobodalla Shire Council rangers, who will check if he's microchipped and reunite him with his family.
Sullivan admitted he'd never rescued an animal quite like this before. This swimming champion got incredibly lucky that witnesses spotted him and that rescuers responded so quickly.
This dog's determination to survive, combined with a community that looked out for him, turned a potential tragedy into a story of resilience and hope.
