$8,600 Gift Honors 1980 Miracle on Ice Hero Mark Wells

A generous gift is ensuring that one of hockey's most unforgettable heroes will be remembered forever in bronze.

Friends of the 1980 Miracle on Ice Team announced an $8,600 donation made in memory of Mark Wells, a gold medalist from the legendary 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team. The contribution supports the Monument to a Miracle, a planned tribute featuring life-size bronze statues of all 20 players who pulled off one of the greatest upsets in sports history.

Mark Wells passed away in 2024 after battling health challenges, but his legacy as one of the team's unsung heroes lives on. Known for his speed, determination, and selfless play, Wells was instrumental in the Americans' historic run to gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

"Mark was an essential part of the Miracle on Ice story, and this contribution helps ensure that future generations will learn about his role and the impact he made both on and off the ice," said Jeff Potter, Chairman of Friends of the 1980 Miracle on Ice Team.

The monument will be unveiled in Lake Placid in February 2030, marking the 50th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice. That's when a group of college kids defeated the seemingly invincible Soviet Union team in a game that captivated millions and inspired a nation during a challenging time in American history.

Sculptor Rob Eccleston is creating the tributes in his Colorado studio, working on statues for the 20 hockey players plus speed skater Eric Heiden, who captured five gold medals at the same 1980 Games.

The Ripple Effect

The fundraising campaign has already raised nearly $1 million toward its $5.2 million goal. Supporters from across the country are stepping up to honor individual players whose stories touched their lives.

Vice Chairman Katie Million noted that every team member played a vital role in creating the miracle. The organization hopes hockey fans will consider donating in honor of the player whose story means the most to them, ensuring each athlete's contribution is properly recognized.

The project includes not just the monuments but also a long-term preservation fund to maintain the tributes for generations to come.

One donation at a time, the legacy of 20 ordinary athletes who achieved something extraordinary is being preserved in bronze and memory.
