Dolly Parton Dies at 80, Gave 300M Books to Children

The woman who grew up in a one-room Tennessee cabin and went on to give 300 million books to children has died at age 80. Dolly Parton passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center following a brief battle with cancer.

Born in Pittman Center as the fourth youngest of 12 children, Parton became one of entertainment's most decorated stars. She collected 11 Grammy awards, three Emmys, and dominated country music with 25 number one singles across 47 top-ten albums.

Her talent was extraordinary. She wrote both "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" on the same day and composed a catalog of 3,000 songs over five decades.

But Parton's greatest legacy may be the Imagination Library, her nonprofit that mailed free books to children from birth to age five. What started as a small program in her home county grew into a global movement that reached the 300 million book milestone before her death.

In 1988, she founded the Dollywood Foundation, which ran programs that reduced the high school dropout rate in her Tennessee home county from 35% to just 6%. She made transformational donations to East Tennessee Children's Hospital, which was renamed in her honor, and gave generously to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos recognized her impact in 2022 with his foundation's Courage and Civility Award, which came with $100 million for her chosen charities. "She gives with her heart," Bezos said. "What she's done for kids and literacy, and so many other things, is just incredible."

The Ripple Effect

Parton's childhood literacy work created waves that will continue for generations. Children who received books through Imagination Library are now parents enrolling their own kids in the program. Studies show the initiative improved school readiness in participating communities and sparked similar programs worldwide.

Her business ventures included a production company that made the Academy Award-winning documentary and television shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She starred in beloved films including 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Steel Magnolias.

Parton married Carl Dean two years after high school and remained with him until his death in 2025. She once said she always believed things would go well. "I always wanted to be a star. It just seemed natural to me."

The President ordered flags lowered to half-mast, and the Empire State Building will shine pink at 9:25 p.m. in her honor. A star who lifted herself up spent her life lifting millions of children higher.
