Domestic Violence Survivor Helps Others After Ex Jailed

🦸 Hero Alert

After her abusive ex-boyfriend was sentenced to 23 months in prison, Danielle Green is sharing her story to help others recognize warning signs of domestic violence. Despite ongoing anxiety and trauma, she's proud she found the courage to walk away and report the abuse. #

Danielle Green wants other people to know they're not alone, even when leaving feels impossible.

After her former partner Ryan McClenaghan was sentenced to 23 months in prison for assault and other crimes, Green decided to speak publicly about her experience. She hopes sharing her story will help others recognize the early warning signs of domestic violence and find the courage to seek help.

The relationship had only lasted six months before the Easter Sunday attack that changed everything. At first, things seemed perfect.

"We were basically inseparable," Green said. But gradually, concerns emerged around alcohol use and controlling behavior that she didn't recognize at the time.

Green thought McClenaghan had her best interests at heart when he tried to control aspects of her health and life. Looking back now, she realizes he wanted her to depend on him completely.

The attack occurred at a property in Holmer Green, Oxfordshire, on April 5 this year. McClenaghan, 27, was also convicted of exposure and racially aggravated harassment against two other victims the same day.

More than three months later, Green continues to struggle with anxiety and says it will take a long time to trust someone again. She recently took time away by the sea to process what happened.

"I just cried every day," she said. "I sat by the sea, I swam and I just cried. That was really rejuvenating for me."

Green has started therapy and is taking steps toward healing. She admitted being terrified to report the abuse, worried the system would fail her or that speaking up would cause more conflict.

Why This Inspires

Green's courage to share her story publicly shows incredible strength at a vulnerable time in her recovery. By speaking out while still healing, she's helping break the silence that keeps so many people trapped in abusive relationships.

Her honesty about the ongoing struggle with anxiety and trust makes her message even more powerful. Recovery isn't instant or perfect, but it's worth fighting for.

"I'm very proud that I walked away," Green said. "I don't want someone to go through what I went through, because it's awful. If speaking out helps even one person recognize the signs or get help, then it's worth it."

She now feels confident that if anything happens in the future, her voice will be heard.
