Don Bradman's Cricket Cap Sells for $318,000 at Auction

A cricket cap carefully protected by an Indian family for three generations just became the most expensive Don Bradman cap ever sold at auction.

The "Baggy Green" cap worn by Bradman during Australia's 1947-48 series against India fetched $318,000 at a Gold Coast auction on Monday. Cricket legend Bradman gave the cap to Indian player Sriranga Wasudev Sohoni after the series, and Sohoni's family treated it like a sacred treasure.

"That's over three generations under lock and key," said Lee Hames from Lloyds Auctioneers. "If you were a family member, you were only allowed to look at it when you were 16 years old for five minutes."

The cap bears both players' names inscribed inside and remains in excellent condition, unlike another Bradman cap damaged by sun and insects that sold for $215,000 last year. An anonymous bidder purchased it with plans to display it publicly at an Australian museum.

The 1947-48 series holds special meaning in cricket history. India had just gained independence from Britain in August 1947, and this Australian tour marked the newly independent nation's first foreign cricket series.

Bradman dominated that historic series with incredible performance. He scored 715 runs across six innings with an average of 178.75 runs, including four centuries and one half-century as Australia won 4-0.

What started as a generous gift between competitors became a family heirloom that connected two cricket-loving nations across decades. The Sohoni family's dedication to preserving this piece of sports history means future generations can witness a tangible link to cricket's golden era.

The cap's public display will let cricket fans worldwide appreciate both Bradman's legendary status and the 1947-48 series that welcomed independent India onto the international cricket stage. Bradman remains widely regarded as cricket's greatest batsman, finishing his 52-match career with an average of 99.94 runs, nearly 40 runs higher than any other player.
