DoorDash Robot Stays Put During Arizona SWAT Scene

A DoorDash delivery robot called Dot became an unexpected witness to a police operation last week, staying put in the middle of a SWAT scene in Chandler, Arizona. The shopping cart-sized bot was just trying to deliver someone's dinner on June 15 when it rolled into an active weapons investigation.

Chandler Police were responding to a serious incident near Ray Road and Hamilton Street when Dot arrived on the scene. Officers tried ordering the robot to turn around, but of course, it couldn't understand human commands.

The robot stayed parked throughout the entire operation, including when the SWAT team deployed a flashbang at the home's window. Video footage shows Dot maintaining its position until a DoorDash employee arrived in a box truck to manually guide it away.

The Bright Side

This awkward encounter actually highlights something important about delivery robot safety. DoorDash explained that Dot did exactly what it was programmed to do when encountering an unexpected situation: stop and wait.

Rather than trying to navigate around police vehicles or push through the scene, the robot's software told it to pause. That's actually good design when you think about it.

Dot is built differently than most delivery robots you might see puttering along sidewalks. The bot travels on roadways and bike lanes at speeds up to 20 miles per hour, making it roomier and faster than its sidewalk-bound cousins.

DoorDash thanked the Chandler Police Department for their professionalism during the incident. The company said it's reviewing what happened to see if any improvements can be made to how their robots handle similar situations.

While autonomous vehicles still have learning curves, this incident shows safety-first programming at work. The robot didn't cause problems or interfere with police work. It simply waited patiently, like any good delivery bot should.
