Dorchester County Seeks Volunteers for River Cleanup

Hundreds of volunteers will take to the Ashley River this month to remove litter and protect one of South Carolina's treasured waterways.

Dorchester County Parks and Recreation is hosting two cleanup events on September 19 as part of the state's biggest one-day volunteer waterway cleanup effort. The morning session runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Ashley River Park Kayak Launch, welcoming volunteers of all experience levels.

A second cleanup happens from noon to 2 p.m. at Swan Drive Kayak Launch. This afternoon session offers a more rugged experience, and organizers recommend wearing sturdy water shoes.

Both events are completely free and open to anyone who wants to help. Charleston Kayak is providing kayaks to borrow, but volunteers don't need to own equipment or even enter the water to participate.

Land-based volunteers play a crucial role by sorting and documenting collected materials. This documentation isn't just busywork. The data supports environmental research and conservation efforts that help scientists understand pollution patterns and develop better protection strategies for South Carolina's waterways.
