Driver Chases Down Purse Thief Who Attacked Woman With Walker

A stranger's split-second decision to help turned a frightening attack into a story of community courage on a Vancouver street corner.

On March 18, a 59-year-old woman using a walker was standing at West 8th Avenue and Spruce Street when a man grabbed her purse just before 4 p.m. The force knocked her to the ground, leaving her with minor injuries.

A driver passing by witnessed the attack and immediately stopped his car to chase the suspect on foot. Despite the danger, he pursued the thief through the neighborhood, refusing to let the attacker get away with hurting someone vulnerable.

When he caught up, the suspect pulled a knife and threatened him. Instead of backing down completely, the Good Samaritan held his ground long enough that the attacker dropped the purse and fled.

The witness returned to the victim with her belongings and gave police a detailed description of the suspect. Thanks to his quick observation skills, Vancouver Police located and arrested the 41-year-old man moments later near the seawall.
