Driver Chases Purse Thief, Saves Woman Using Walker
A passing driver in Vancouver turned hero when he chased down a purse thief who had knocked over a 59-year-old woman using a walker. Despite being threatened with a knife, he recovered the stolen purse and helped police catch the suspect.
When a 59-year-old woman using a walker was knocked to the ground during a purse snatching on Wednesday afternoon, a stranger refused to just drive by.
The incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. at West 8th Avenue and Spruce Street in Vancouver. A man grabbed the woman's purse, causing her to fall and suffer minor injuries.
A driver who witnessed the attack immediately stopped his vehicle and chased the suspect into a nearby building complex. What happened next could have ended very differently.
"He actually got challenged by the suspect with a knife," said Vancouver Police Const. Megan Lui. But the Good Samaritan didn't back down.

He managed to retrieve the purse from the armed suspect and return it to the victim. He also gave police such a detailed description that officers quickly located and arrested the 41-year-old suspect near the seawall.
The man now faces charges of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and remains in custody. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call the VPD at 604-717-3321.
Sunny's Take
This story could have been a tragedy, but one person's courage turned it into something else entirely. The driver didn't know if he'd face a weapon when he started chasing the thief, but he did it anyway because someone needed help.
"We do commend this Good Samaritan for assisting the victim," Lui said. "We are just very thankful that there are no other further injuries."
The woman got her purse back, the suspect is off the streets, and Vancouver has one more reminder that everyday heroes still exist.
