Dry January Challenge Raises $460 for Mental Health
A month-long mindful drinking challenge in New York's Mohawk Valley brought the community together while raising funds for mental health services. Local restaurants, wellness leaders, and everyday participants proved that small lifestyle changes can create big impact.
When participants of the first-ever Dry January Mohawk Valley Challenge gathered to celebrate their wellness journey, they had something extra to toast about with their mocktails: $460 raised for local mental health services.
The month-long initiative encouraged people across the Mohawk Valley to explore mindful drinking while tracking the money they saved by cutting back on alcohol. Participants received weekly support, mocktail recipes, reflection tools, and access to a private community throughout January.
The Center for Family Life and Recovery received the donation, which will support prevention education, recovery programs, and mental health services across the region. The challenge was created by Cristi Kaido, founder of The Mindful Mixer, whose wellness workshops focus on mindfulness, nutrition, and community connection.
Two local restaurants joined the effort in a creative way. Vine & Fig in Rome and Beeches Manor each featured a weekly Mindful Mixer mocktail on their menus, donating one dollar from every sale to the cause. Vine & Fig also hosted the final celebration event where participants reflected on their experiences.

"The Dry January Mohawk Valley Challenge not only raised funds for our organization, but also created meaningful conversations around wellness, recovery, and community support," said Cassandra Sheets, CEO of the Center for Family Life and Recovery. She noted that initiatives like this help reduce stigma and remind people they're not alone.
The Ripple Effect
Beyond the dollars raised, the challenge sparked something bigger in the community. Clinton Fit Body Boot Camp and Whitesboro Fit Body Boot Camp helped spread the word locally, showing how wellness businesses can amplify positive messages.
The event created space for honest conversations about alcohol, mental health, and community support. Participants didn't just save money or improve their health individually. They built connections with others on similar journeys and contributed to services that help neighbors in need.
Local businesses discovered they could support wellness while still thriving. The restaurants found customers excited to try creative mocktails, proving that mindful drinking options aren't just nice to have but actually in demand.
The success of this first challenge shows what happens when wellness leaders, local businesses, and everyday community members unite around a shared purpose. Sometimes the most powerful change starts with one simple invitation: try something different together, and see what good comes from it.
