DUT Employee Earns Accounting Diploma While Working Full-Time

Tracy Samuels knows what it means to push through exhaustion for a dream worth chasing. The 35-year-old just graduated from Durban University of Technology with an Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting while working full-time in the very institution where she studied.

Since joining DUT's Postgraduate Finance Office in May 2021, Tracy has managed faculty finances by day and hit the books by night. Her graduation ceremony took place at the Olive Convention Centre on May 20, 2026, marking the end of a demanding journey she describes as deeply transformative.

Growing up in Wentworth, south of Durban, Tracy had already earned her National Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting. But she wanted more for her future. The decision to continue studying while working full-time came from a desire to create better career opportunities and strengthen her professional prospects.

The path wasn't easy. Balancing work responsibilities with academic deadlines and personal commitments left Tracy feeling overwhelmed at times. She overcame these obstacles through careful planning, strict discipline, and taking things one step at a time, even when that meant sacrificing sleep.

"The late nights and early mornings," she explained, capturing the reality many working students face. Her life partner became her anchor during the toughest moments, encouraging her to stay motivated and understanding when she needed to focus on her studies.
