Instead of just slapping solar panels on the roof and calling it a day, they're building complete electrification systems that work together. The numbers tell an interesting story. Residential solar sales reached just under 200 megawatts in the first half of this year, down from 548 megawatts across all of 2025. Meanwhile, businesses are racing to install larger systems. Commercial solar installations hit 843 megawatts in the first six months of 2026, already more than half of last year's total. Grid congestion is driving the boom. Over 14,000 Dutch companies sit on waiting lists for grid connections, representing more than 9 gigawatts of electricity demand with nowhere to plug in.

For many businesses, solar and batteries aren't optional upgrades anymore. They're survival tools. When the grid can't deliver enough power to keep production running, companies are building their own energy systems to fill the gap.

The end of the Netherlands' generous net metering program in 2027 could have spelled doom for rooftop solar. The policy currently lets homeowners sell excess solar power back to utilities at retail rates, making panels incredibly profitable. Homeowners with solar panels are looking for new ways to maximize their systems' value. Batteries offer the perfect solution by storing daytime solar power for evening use. Analysts forecast around 5 gigawatt-hours of new storage systems by the end of 2026, a massive jump that's turning Dutch homes into resilient energy hubs.
There's still uncertainty about what utilities will pay for solar power after 2027. Most energy companies currently offer less than one cent per kilowatt-hour after fees. Dutch regulators need to decide whether that's fair. If they set a minimum feed-in price that favors consumers, solar sales could surge in the second half of this year as homeowners rush to install systems before the landscape shifts again.
