Dutch Queen Máxima, 54, Joins Armed Forces as Reservist

At 54, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands is proving it's never too late to serve your country in a whole new way.

The Dutch queen picked up her military uniform last week to begin training as a reservist in the armed forces, according to Dutch broadcasters RTL Nieuws and NOS. She's joining just under the wire, as 55 is the maximum age to apply for the program.

Máxima isn't stepping into unfamiliar territory. Her husband, King Willem-Alexander, trained with the marines as a young man and holds reserve ranks across multiple branches of the armed forces.

The royal family's military commitment became a full circle moment last month when Máxima was photographed hugging her eldest daughter, Princess Amalia, after she completed corporal training. Amalia is currently studying at Defensity College, where students receive basic military training alongside their regular education and earn official reservist status upon completion.

Last October, photographers captured Máxima in full battle dress during a visit to the Marechaussee military police training center in Harderwijk, complete with camouflage face paint. Those photos now take on new meaning as preparation rather than just protocol.
