Dutch Sculptor Turns 30 Tons of Sand Into Roman Masterpiece

Jeroen Advocaat just proved that patience, precision, and a whole lot of sand can create something extraordinary.

The Dutch sculptor and illustrator won the 2024 European Sand Sculpture Championship in Garderen, Netherlands, beating four international competitors with his dramatic piece titled "Roma Eternae" (Eternal Rome). His winning sculpture depicts a Roman soldier threatening a citizen against a crumbling wall, capturing the power and fragility of the ancient empire in compressed sand.

The judges praised the work for its "WOW factor," citing its originality, technical perfection, and powerful storytelling. For a competition where artists work with identical materials and time limits, standing out requires something special.

Advocaat spent six and a half days sculpting his vision from 30 tons of sand. But the biggest challenge wasn't the sheer volume of material or the tight deadline.

"Catching the emotions on the faces was the most challenging," Advocaat told local media. "Every little change to the mouth or eyebrows changes the expression." Those tiny adjustments, barely visible tweaks to sandy features, made the difference between a statue and a story.

Mother Nature didn't make things easy either. Rain pelted the competition site over several days, threatening to wash away hours of delicate work and testing each sculptor's ability to protect and preserve their creations.

Sand sculpture championships remind us that art doesn't need permanence to have impact. These artists pour days of effort into works that will eventually return to individual grains, yet they create anyway. Advocaat's willingness to obsess over the curve of a sandy eyebrow shows the dedication behind any masterpiece, even temporary ones.

Visitors can see "Roma Eternae" and the other competition entries at the Beeldentuin sculpture garden in Garderen through the end of summer. After that, the sculptures will fade, but the memories and photos will last much longer than any empire.
