East Orange Staff Reunite Boy Left Alone on School Bus
When a 10-year-old woke up locked inside a school bus, a chain of kindness brought him safely home. Strangers turned into heroes in less than an hour.
A young boy who fell asleep on his school bus in East Orange, New Jersey, found himself locked inside alone Tuesday morning, but a string of good Samaritans made sure his scary situation ended safely.
The child, believed to be about 10 years old, woke up to find himself trapped on a Circle Transportation bus parked on Sanford Street. He pried open the front door and escaped, wandering until a woman spotted him and brought him to nearby Virgo Ambulance and Medical Transportation.
"She just brought him over to our office and said, 'Can you help this kid?'" owner Ahmed Hassan recalled. The woman left before anyone could get her name.
Surveillance footage captured the moment employees comforted the frightened child. Employee Michelle Luthman said he was "a little distraught, but he was OK."
The team faced a challenge when they asked how to contact his mom. "He said 'Mom.' He couldn't tell us any more," Luthman explained. The boy didn't know his parents' phone numbers.

Thinking quickly, the employees asked to look through his backpack and found his name and teacher's name on homework. They helped him unlock his cellphone to search for contact information.
Police arrived along with representatives from the bus company. Within an hour, four family members rushed in, including both parents, and were reunited with their son.
Sunny's Take
What started as every parent's nightmare became a testament to community care. A stranger didn't walk past a confused child. Office workers didn't just make a phone call and move on with their day. They sat with him, calmed him down, and pieced together a puzzle to get him home.
The good Samaritan who first helped the boy vanished before anyone could thank her. Sometimes the best kindness expects nothing in return.
Hassan and his team turned an ordinary Tuesday into proof that people still show up for each other, especially for kids who need help.
The boy spent just one hour away from his family, surrounded by people who treated him like he mattered.
