Easter Baptisms Unite Faith Communities in South Africa

On Easter Friday, the waters of Kliprivier became a place of joy and transformation as multiple churches came together for baptism ceremonies south of Johannesburg.

Families and fellow worshippers lined the riverbanks to witness congregants taking part in the sacred ritual. Bishop Sabbath Thwala of the Kingdom of God Church in Zion led ceremonies alongside assistant Bishop Mnongo, immersing believers in the flowing water.

The scenes captured by photographer Felix Dlangamandla show the diversity and devotion of the gathered community. Some congregants wore white robes while others chose different ceremonial garments, all united in their commitment to faith.

Before entering the water, worshippers knelt together in prayer. Candles passed from hand to hand created moments of quiet reflection amid the celebration.

The natural setting added to the spiritual atmosphere. Teboho Qhetsi walked toward a waterfall during the services, while Nomthandazo Khumalo sat atop the falls as Ayanda Khumalo and Mzwandile Mdladla prayed beneath the rushing water.

Bishops held hands in the river, carrying ceremonial sticks adorned with crosses and circles. Each immersion brought congregants like Lerato Sekoboto and Reverend Simon Raboroko up from the water renewed.
