EBRD and SEforALL Partner to Power Africa's Clean Energy

Hundreds of millions of people across Africa still lack access to reliable electricity, but a new partnership announced in London could finally change that. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Sustainable Energy for All signed an agreement to accelerate clean energy projects across the continent through 2028.

The collaboration focuses on practical solutions that work for remote communities. Instead of waiting decades for traditional power grids to expand, the partnership will support mini-grids and decentralized renewable energy systems that can bring electricity to underserved villages now.

The timing couldn't be more critical. Africa's population is growing rapidly, and energy shortages continue to hold back economic growth, healthcare delivery, and education. Without reliable power, hospitals can't refrigerate medicines, students can't study after dark, and businesses can't grow.

One of the partnership's key targets is expanding cold-chain infrastructure across agricultural regions. Better cooling systems mean farmers can store their harvests longer, reducing food waste and improving food security. It also means vaccines and medicines can reach more people safely.

The agreement combines two complementary strengths. SEforALL brings experience supporting energy transition planning in over 115 countries, while EBRD specializes in mobilizing private sector investment for major infrastructure projects. Together, they're working to unlock the €150 billion in green financing needed by 2030.

Local financial institutions will receive support to develop green finance products, making it easier for African businesses and communities to access affordable loans for solar panels, mini-grids, and other clean energy technologies. This approach reduces dependence on external funding and builds long-term capacity within African economies.

The Ripple Effect: When communities gain reliable electricity for the first time, the transformation extends far beyond turning on lights. Children can study in the evenings, extending their learning time. Healthcare clinics can refrigerate vaccines and run essential equipment. Small businesses can operate longer hours and use modern tools. Women spend less time on manual tasks like grinding grain by hand, freeing them to pursue education or income-generating work. Digital connectivity becomes possible, linking remote villages to wider opportunities.

For countries pursuing both industrialization and climate goals simultaneously, this partnership offers a roadmap. Clean energy isn't just about reducing emissions anymore; it's about creating the foundation for inclusive economic growth that doesn't sacrifice the planet.

The partnership will support initiatives including Mission 300, which aims to connect 300 million Africans to electricity, and the Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy Fund. By focusing on decentralized systems, the collaboration addresses both climate commitments and immediate development needs.

Africa's energy demand will only increase in coming decades, making partnerships like this essential for meeting universal access goals. Success will be measured not just in megawatts installed, but in lives improved and opportunities created.
